Description

The practicum is the capstone experience of the Philanthropic Leadership Certificate Program. It will give you practice applying the skills and knowledge acquired in the other courses, while at the same time demonstrating to current or prospective employers your ability to lead a successful fund-raising operation. The number of credits will be a function of the scope, duration, and challenges associated with the activity undertaken. Well executed, the practicum will provide compelling evidence to employers on the value added of the certificate program.

You will complete this course with a completed online portfolio, but are strongly encouraged to update it over time, especially if enrolled in other courses in the Certificate Program.

Organization

This course includes two tracks: a practicum and an online portfolio. Completion of both tracks is necessary for success.

Practicum:
Upon completion of the course registration form and approval from the instructor, the student will draft an overview of the project(s) proposed for the practicum. The student and instructor will agree on a submission timeline for this work. Work will be completed on a job site under the supervision of the preceptor. At the end of the semester, a summary document will be due, encapsulating your experiences in the practicum.

Deliverables: Project updates, summary document

Online Portfolio:
A separate track consists of producing an online portfolio. The portfolio will be built and populated with works produced within the certificate program. A finalized version of the portfolio will be required in order to complete this course.

Deliverables: Portfolio updates, completed portfolio.

Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) Program

This course is eligible for credits toward CFRE accreditation through the Association of Fundraising Professionals. For more information, please contact your instructor, or visit the CFRE Program webpage.

Online Learning and Attendance

This course has been developed to promote asynchronous learning. The instructor and students do NOT meet on a designated day and time each week. For each lesson, there is a timeframe to complete all activities and assignments, and you may work at your own pace within that timeframe. However, you must adhere to the due dates outlined on the Calendar. (Due dates can also be viewed under the Syllabus tab.) You should log into the course daily to check for updates, review lessons, and participate in activities.

Library Services

Penn State Libraries provides a wide variety of services and resources. To learn how to take advantage, refer to the Online Student Library Guide at http://guides.libraries.psu.edu/onlinestudentlibraryguide. This guide serves as your starting point for access to all that Penn State Libraries can offer you as an online student. Use this guide if you have questions on library services offered to you, how the library can help you, how to use the library, or what resources you can access via the library! The guide will connect you to important pages and resources within Penn State Libraries and save time from you searching for the information you need.

Penn State Libraries put together a research guide specifically for LA 802 Fundraising Leadership II: Achieving Success. It's been included here in case the resources included may be valuable to you in your work for LA 895. The guide includes links to databases, publications and organizations related to this course, as well as information on citing sources in APA style.
