Check Your Zoom Settings

To minimize technical issues, you should test your audio/video prior to your first class.

Go to: https://zoom.us/test to test your internet, audio, and video.
- Click the Mute button to Mute/Unmute yourself. A red slash will appear when you are muted. When you are unmuted, a green bar will fluctuate on the icon as you speak. To check your microphone and speakers, click the up arrow to the right of the microphone and select Audio Settings. If you can not connect to the audio from your computer, you also have the option of joining the audio from your phone.

Change your Display Name and/or Photo

To customize your account, you can change your display name to your preferred name. Please note that your instructor may take attendance based on your name in Zoom, so be sure to communicate with your instructor if your preferred name varies significantly from your official name.
You can also upload a profile picture to be displayed when your camera is off. To add or change your profile picture, follow these steps: Zoom: How Do I Add My Profile Picture in Zoom.

Check your Internet Connection

Test your internet connection speed at: https://www.speedtest.net/.

Strategies for Improving your Connection

Disable additional devices using wifi that are not in use.
Ask other household members to avoid high-bandwidth activities like gaming or streaming .
Turn off your camera if your connection speed is slow.

Complete Pre-course Work

Check Canvas and/or your email for any course work that should be done prior to class.
Your professor may post documents in Canvas that you will be asked to access during class.

Join your Class Meeting

Please check your Penn State email and Canvas for communication from your professor for how to join the class meeting. Your professor may share the class connection information in a Zoom link in Canvas, an Announcement in Canvas, or through email or Canvas Inbox. Please reach out to your instructor 24 hours prior to the meeting if you are unsure how to connect.

Join via Canvas

You may be asked to join your Zoom class through your Canvas course. If enabled, you will see a link to Zoom in the Course Navigation menu. Follow these instructions for joining a meeting via the Zoom learning tool in Canvas (Links to an external site.).

If your professor has provided a link, follow these instructions to join a meeting via URL (Links to an external site.).

Sign into Zoom with your PSU Account

Your instructor may have enabled a Zoom setting that requires you to log in with your PSU Account.

Pop up box that says "This meeting is for authorized attendees only. Click "Sign In to Join" to sign into Zoom with an email address authorized for joining this meeting."

If you see the above dialog pop up box when trying to join a meeting, click ‘Sign in to Join’.
Next, click ‘Sign in with SSO’.
On the Sign In with SSO screen, enter ‘psu’ for Company Domain (if not already displayed) and click ‘Continue’.
On the WebAccess screen, enter your PSU User ID and Password and click ‘Log In’.
