Chapter 5. Tips and resources for PSU students
The Pennsylvania State University offers a wide range of study abroad programs to PSU students. You can start the process by researching the websites available for information. Spend enough time researching and following the procedures laid out for you step-by-step to ease yourself into a successful study abroad experience. It is crucial that you start early and allow enough time to go through the process smoothly. Each program has its own set of requirements and eligibility, so take time to fully learn about each program and figure out whether it fits with your needs. Some may require letters of recommendation, scholarship applications, essays and/or personal statements. Most importantly, watch for due dates so that you do not miss a valuable opportunity. How to
We suggest you start the planning process one year ahead of time to explore possibilities. Most colleges including Penn State advise students to cover all bases prior to making the commitment. Procedures and deadlines might vary, but the process heavily relies on researching available opportunities, connecting with staffs, collecting relevant information and seeking assistance as needed. Here are few of the necessary steps to ensure your planning of a study abroad adventure:
- Collect information on available study abroad opportunities at the university
- Meet with the following people:
- An advisor/representative to explore countries and programs
- An academic advisor to make sure your earned credits will be transferable. (will apply to your major, degree, or field of study)
- A student financial aid advisor to discuss financing eligibility including scholarships and grants
- A study abroad advisor to discuss travel documents, insurance, safety and cultural rules and proper behaviors while abroad
- A staff at the Financial Literacy and Life Skills Center Links to an external site. to create a budget, discuss monetary challenges and identity theft protection
- International students to discuss potential social, economic, political, and educational issues at your destination
- Other students who studied abroad to discuss their experiences
