Introduction to the Learning Mastery Gradebook
Introduction
Outcomes in Canvas allow you to track student "mastery" of topics and concepts across multiple assignments within a course. Mastery learning is measuring proficiency of a certain skill with the goal of achieving mastery. The Learning Mastery Gradebook can help you evaluate outcomes that are being aligned with course assignments, quizzes, and other assessments being used in Canvas courses. This page provides information on the relationship between outcomes, rubrics, and the Learning Mastery Gradebook and how you can leverage all three in your course.

How are outcomes, rubrics, and the Learning Mastery Gradebook related?
It is important to see how outcomes, rubrics, and the Learning Mastery Gradebook are related. By using these three tools in Canvas, you will be able to measure your students' progress towards mastery.
Outcomes, rubrics, and the Learning Mastery Gradebook:
- Outcomes are created using the Outcomes tool and can be added to rubrics in order to track students' progression toward mastery of those outcomes.
- Rubrics can be used to grade quizzes, assignments, and discussions in your course.
- The Learning Mastery Gradebook shows the students' level of mastery for each outcome.
Align an outcome with a rubric
You can align any outcome in your course to a rubric. In order to include an outcome in a rubric, the outcome must already exist for your course. Review the document below to learn how to align an outcome with a rubric:

NOTE: Outcomes can be added to rubrics, but rubrics cannot be added to outcomes.
The Rubrics page of the Canvas Learning Path will provide you with resources on outcomes and rubrics in Canvas. You will learn how to create outcomes, create and manage rubrics, and attach rubrics to assessments.

View individual student progress toward outcomes
Canvas provides a report to view outcomes results for individual students in a course. The report will provide you with the number of student attempts, latest score, and average percentage for each outcome. Read the tutorial below to learn how to view this report:
