GenAI Use Is Not Permitted

Overview

The following styles have been developed to inform students that the use of GenAI is not permitted, either at the course level or as part of a specific assignment.

What You Need to Do

  1. Review the style options and select which one works best for your course.
  2. Copy the code provided (located directly below each style).
  3. Go to the page of the Canvas course you wish to modify.
  4. Select the Edit button, and then select the HTML editor (the </> button beneath the RCE window).
  5. Paste the code.
  6. After pasting the code, switch back to the RCE by selecting the </> button again to view the result of your code.
  7. Review the exemplar text provided and modify as needed.
    • Either modify the exemplar text or add information articulating what GenAI uses are not permitted.
    • If there is any additional information or perspective from your instructional point of view that you would like to include, add that language in the space provided.
      • If not, delete the placeholder text.
  8. Finally, provide any additional detail, instructions, and support needed for students to be successful in the assignment and meet your expectations for level of AI use.

Note, these GenAI icons are intended to be used with the descriptive header text and one of the suggested styles included in this resource. Using the GenAI icons on their own requires the use alt text. If you opt to use the GenAI Use is Not Permitted icon in an alternate manner, please make sure to add the descriptive text. (e.g., GenAI Use is Not Permitted) when uploading the image in Canvas in the Alt text field provided.

Basic Design

GenAI Use Is Not Permitted

You may not use GenAI. This includes standalone large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Llama, DeepSeek, Claude, or Anthropic and software with AI features.

Express Yourself

Your work should be completed independently, drawing on your own knowledge, reasoning, and original expressions. Your submissions should demonstrate your growth and meaningful connections to course concepts, independent of any GenAI tools.

GenAI Tools

The use of GenAI to create or revise content on your behalf is not permitted. This includes standalone LLMs and AI features embedded in common software (e.g., Microsoft 365 products). These features should be avoided to the greatest extent possible. If you are uncertain about the use of specific tools or features, consult with your instructor prior to using them in your assignment.

Not Permitted

The following actions are not permitted:

[Instructor update or remove from list as needed]

  • using spelling and grammar checkers;
  • entering all or part of any assignment, discussion, test, or quiz question as part of a prompt to a GenAI tool;
  • incorporating any part of a GenAI-written response in an assignment, discussion, test, or quiz;
  • using GenAI to summarize or contextualize reading assignments, discussions, or source materials;
  • using GenAI to create slides, outlines, images, audio, or other creative expression; or
  • submitting your own work for this class to a GenAI tool for iteration or improvement.
