Preparing for Your Advising Apointment

Your initial advising appointment is an invaluable resource available to you to ensure that you start your first semester well.

In order to make the most of this appointment, we recommend that you do the following:

  • Find a distraction-free and quiet place so you can focus on the conversation.
  • Please do not attempt to meet with your adviser while driving.
  • Turn off your cell phone and notifications on your computer. Close unneeded applications on your computer to save bandwidth and avoid distractions.
  • Inform your friends and family that you will not be available during the appointment time.
  • Make sure your technology is working. If you're meeting via Zoom, it’s best to sign on at least 5 minutes before your appointment to ensure your internet access is stable and your camera and microphone are working.
  • Consider using headphones to prevent background noises from impacting your ability to hear the important information the adviser is sharing.
  • Log into LionPATH and access your Shopping Cart with your tentative first semester schedule, and make sure all your holds, with the possible exception of New Student Orientation, are taken care of prior to your meeting.
  • Prepare and write down any questions you may have for your adviser ahead of time to ensure that you remember them during the conversation.
  • Keep a pen or pencil and paper nearby to take notes so that you can remember what was discussed.
  • If meeting via Zoom, remember to select Leave Meeting once your appointment is over.
