Advising, Disability & Academic Support
Academic Advisers
Undergraduate military students are advised by trained military academic advisers who work only with military-affiliated students. Your academic adviser is aware that you may need to juggle work requirements and family demands, and fit schoolwork in around the edges. We understand that, as someone affiliated with the military, you have unique challenges, including nontraditional work schedules, travel requirements, and duty changes with little notice.
As a military student, you can expect the following from your academic adviser:
- help staying on track with your academic goals and choosing courses that meet both academic requirements and your personal interests while planning your academic program;
- provision of clear and specific instructions, while providing consistent encouraging feedback;
- knowledge of University policies and procedures;
- the ability to share helpful resources for being successful as well as to share information about education benefits and where to go to access them;
- assisting with form requests, such as Student Agreements, Tuition Assistance, and Parent Institutional Letters;
- understanding the JST and how military credits may work toward your degree;
- flexibility if requested due to military demands, such as student adviser appointment availability outside of traditional work hours;
- managing the impact of deployments, trainings, and relocations (with these situations, there is some flexibility available to you depending on the situation, and your adviser can give you more information should you need it); and
- policies and procedures that you can take advantage of if your military duty is keeping you from being successful in a course.
As you can see, you’ll work with your adviser to plan your academic program, stay on track to graduate, choose courses, and manage the impact of deployments, trainings, and relocations.
