Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) offers research support, tools and resources, consultative services, funding, training and education. These efforts foster collaborations across disciplines to translate new discoveries into practice; connect basic and clinical scientists in the discovery of new treatments, procedures and ways to predict, prevent and treat disease; train new and existing health professionals and investigators; and to support research across the continuum, at all Penn State campuses, and for researchers at every stage of their learning and career.

Primary Strategic Goals


MISSION:
Our mission is to connect translational scientists and community partners to improve healthy living and health equity, by supporting research infrastructure through funding, training and education, community engagement, and collaborative programs across Penn State University and the Commonwealth.

VISION:
Our vision is to improve rural health by advancing translational science and scientists in partnership with communities to bring discoveries into practice.

Community Health Equity and Engagement in Research (CHEER)

Penn State Community Health Equity and Engagement in Research (CHEER) provides educational sessions to researchers looking to engage communities in their research and for community organizations and members to engage with Penn State expertise. Cheer is a collaborative Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and CTSI initiative to strengthen existing and foster new community-academic partnerships in community-engaged research efforts across PA communities.

iSMART: Infrastructure for Support, Mentorship & Research Training

iSMART Links to an external site. is a ‘for researchers, by researchers’ program designed to improve infrastructure, support, diversity, and efficiency for research teams conducting human subject research at the College of Medicine and across the University. iSMART features five new programs to support research faculty and staff on their path to discovery. These programs are designed with content to facilitate understanding of the respective roles and foster highly efficient and well-functioning teams. Provost Endorsement Program

The Provost Endorsement Program Links to an external site. sets a new standard for professional development at Penn State. Each endorsement is crafted to include clear goals, purposeful learning outcomes and a curriculum that’s grounded in current research. With at least 10 hours of programming per endorsement, reflective activities and peer interactions, participants are ensured a robust educational experience.
Endorsements are offered in three domains:
  • Domain 1: Teaching and Outreach
  • Domain 2: Research, Scholarship, and Creative Accomplishment
  • Domain 3: Leadership and Service

Affiliate Program

The CTSI Affiliate Program Links to an external site. consists of Penn State faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and research staff who are interested in institutional networking to conduct high quality, collaborative clinical and translational research. Our program officially supports clinical and translational researchers at all Penn State locations and expands their representation within the CTSI. CTSI Fun Facts


Last year, we fielded 277 requests for research support from Penn State faculty, staff, and students. The top 5 requests included: BERD, QMMC, Informatics, Community engagement, recruitment and retention.

Penn State is one of 66 medical research institutions that receives CTSA program funding and we are one of the few that has a rural focused mission. 

We support human subjects research at 2 locations across Penn State: Clinical Research Center at University Park and Clinical Research Center at Hershey. This past year, we supported 80 PIs, and a total of 2,995 research participant visits. 

Our CTSI is connected to over 120 health systems around the globe through TriNetX Links to an external site., a web-based tool for research population cohort and feasibility queries, and this data is available to you at no cost.
