Responsible Conduct of Research

Penn State is committed to the responsible and ethical conduct of research and requires research ethics training for all faculty and researchers, as well as postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates participating in research. All new faculty are required to take training as part of the Scholarship and Research Integrity (SARI) program within their first year of employment at Penn State. In order to fulfill your SARI requirement Links to an external site., you must complete a training course in CITI (citi.psu.edu Links to an external site.). The Responsible Conduct of Research Basic course is recommended, but IRB and IACUC courses can also satisfy (note: National Science Foundation awardees MUST take the RCR course). You will receive an email notifying you of this training requirement.

In addition, the office offers numerous responsible conduct of research Zoom workshops Links to an external site. every semester, which may be of interest to you or your students.

Research Integrity Program

The Research Integrity Program in the ORP handles all allegations of research misconduct for the University. Research misconduct is defined as fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results. Dr. Courtney Karmelita Links to an external site. oversees of the Research Integrity Program and serves as the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) for all of Penn State University, including the College of Medicine, Commonwealth campuses, and all institutes and labs.
