Institute of Energy and the Environment

The Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE) connects and supports interdisciplinary teams of researchers that are solving some of the world’s most difficult energy and environmental challenges.

Our world needs abundant, clean, safe, and affordable energy. Our planet also needs innovative solutions to sustain a healthy, protected environment. Together, we find answers that advance our local, state, national, and global communities.

IEE's research is organized into five strategic themes:

  • Climate and Natural Systems
  • Health and the Environment
  • Integrated Energy Systems
  • Equitable Communities and the Built Environment
  • Water Sustainability

Fun Facts Alt Text

The image shows three fun facts for IEE. 1. Since 2014, over 200 interdisciplinary energy and environmental research projects, in support of over 450 researchers, were funded through the IEE Seed Grant Program. Program results include hundreds of publications and research presentations and millions of dollars in external research funding., 2. Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access (PASDA), supported by IEE, is Pennsylvania's official public access open geospatial data portal, that provides free public access to geospatial data and information by, for, and about the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania., 3. IEE's Radiocarbon Laboratory is 1 of 8 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry facilities of its type in the United States. The facility provides dating of materials spanning the last 45,000 years in diverse fields such as geology, archeology, and climate reconstruction.
