Alumni of The Fox Graduate School have their own society within the Penn State Alumni Association. The Fox Graduate School Alumni Society collaborates with The Graduate School to provide professional development opportunities for graduate students as well as alumni. The information below provides an overview of the many resources available to students through The Fox Graduate School Alumni Society. Links to an external site.

What is the Graduate School Alumni Society (GSAS)?

The Fox Graduate School Alumni Society is a constituent society of the Penn State Alumni Association. Their mission is to:

  • Nurture relationships between Penn State graduate students and alumni, both nationally and internationally
  • Enhance the overall graduate experience; advance graduate education and research
  • Increase graduate alumni membership in the Penn State Alumni Association.

GSAS works closely with The Fox Graduate School to help serve the needs of graduate students and alumni. Current graduate students are invited to join the GSAS Board every year to lend their voice to developing student programs. 

Programs for Current Graduate Students:

Career Exploration Workshop. This annual workshop, sponsored by graduate alumni, provides a forum for graduate students to explore topics relevant to their professional and career development that are not always covered by their academic programs. Alumni draw upon personal experiences and professional expertise to discuss topics such as: time management, career planning strategies, careers in industry vs. academia, negotiating a job offer, etc. The workshop provides an opportunity for students to grow their professional networks. 

International Student Welcome and Networking Event. Nearly a third of all residential graduate students at Penn State are from outside the United States. The GSAS sponsors events throughout the year to welcome international graduate students to the Penn State community and to support their academic success. 

Programs for Graduate School Alumni:

Doctoral Alumni Recognition Weekend and GSAS Alumni Awards. During the Graduate Exhibition Weekend, the GSAS and The Fox Graduate School recognize the professional achievements of alumni who received their doctorate 10, 25 and 50 years ago.  Alumni celebrating milestone anniversaries of their doctoral degree are honored with a plaque on the Wall of Honor in Kern Graduate Building Lobby. Stop by Kern sometime to see the names of scholars who have come before you.

GSAS celebrates the achievements of outstanding graduate alumni during the alumni weekend with the following awards: 

  • Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes alumni who have achieved exceptional success in their profession, and who have demonstrated loyalty to the University and the Penn State Alumni Association.
  • Early Career Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated exceptional success in their chosen field within the first 10 years after obtaining their graduate degree.
  • Humanitarian Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated positive societal impact on the welfare of humankind beyond the responsibilities of their profession.
