External Funding

The Fox Graduate School is often made aware of individual funding opportunities for graduate students and maintains the details in a database of external awards. This database, however, is limited to the information that is received by the office and it should not be considered inclusive of all possible opportunities.

There are many resources available via the web that list funding opportunities for graduate students. If you find an opportunity that you think would be a great opportunity for you but that requires an institutional submission, the Office of Graduate Fellowships and Awards Administration Links to an external site. can partner with you to complete the submission. Your faculty mentor is the first resource you should use as you begin writing. While the Fox Graduate School's Office of Fellowships and Awards Administration does not provide writing support, it has partnerships with university offices that can provide you with feedback, such as the Graduate Writing Center Links to an external site. or the Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring Office Links to an external site. for specified fellowship applications ( although their primary audience is undergraduates, they will assist with certain fellowship applications at the graduate level including the NSF GRFP).

Some of the more prestigious external fellowships Links to an external site. (facilitated by Penn State centrally) include:

  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program
  • NIH National Research Service Awards
  • HHMI Gilliam Fellowship
  • Ford Foundation Fellowship
  • Smithsonian Institute Fellowship
  • Fulbright-Hays Fellowship
