Introduction to Immigration and Visas

Overview:

In this module, International Student and Scholar Advising (ISSA)Links to an external site. will be discussing important information related to U.S. Immigration policies and procedures. We will discuss the various documentation you need to complete, information on enrolling for courses, and policies on employment. At the end of this module, you will be presented with information on who to contact if you have additional questions.  

Learning Objectives:

After completing this module, you will be able to: 

Introduction 

  • Define the keywords: SEVIS, visa, status, I-94, I-20, DS-2019.
  • Describe and follow the general flow of the student cycle from application through completion of the program.

Visas and Arrival

  • Determine which visa document best applies to your situation. 
  • Discover how to find Penn State's SEVIS School code to transfer from another U.S. School.
  • Hear how long it takes to receive your I-20 or DS-2019.

U.S. Government Rules 

  • Understand the enrollment requirements for undergraduate and graduate student visa holders.
  • Learn about on and off-campus employment options and regulations. 
  • Discover what is required for traveling in and outside of the U.S. 
  • Realize the significance of maintaining your visa status and the consequences if rules are violated. 

How to Get Help 

  • Identify who you need to contact for immigration questions. 
  • Learn how you can reach ISSA advising staff and explain why you shouldn't ask a friend/ professor for immigration advice.
