University Health Services (UHS)

Now that we’ve explored all of your insurance options, let’s talk more about on-campus health services.

Exterior of the Student Health Center building

If you are attending a campus other than University Park, please inquire if your campus has an on-site health center or practitioner.

At University Park, University Health Services (abbreviated as UHS) is located in the Student Health Center on Bigler Road. The building is adjacent to the Bank of America Career Services Building and the Eisenhower Parking Deck.

UHS is open by appointment on:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

In many countries, you can always walk into your doctor's office at any time to be seen. In the U.S., most of the time you want to meet with a doctor or nurse you need to make an appointment. You must call ahead of time and find out when they are available. This is a cultural difference for some students who are used to walking into a doctor's office at any time to seek care.  During the fall and spring semesters, UHS is open on Saturdays (appointment necessary) between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Medical Care

UHS has many board-certified clinicians that can provide treatment for a variety of health concerns that most commonly include:

  • Sore throats
  • Fever
  • Colds
  • Flu and other viral infections
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Headaches
  • And more

Keep in mind that if you purchase the SHIP for Penn State as your health insurance plan, UHS should be your first stop for medical treatment to keep costs at a minimum. If you require additional treatment or follow-up care off-campus, UHS staff will be able to refer you to the appropriate provider.

Who can be seen at UHS?

UHS treats all registered students and adult dependents (spouses and children over the age of 18) of students who are enrolled in the SHIP for Penn State. It is important to note that UHS does not treat children.

Health care for children under the age of 18 can be obtained through the Penn State Hershey medical groups. Other local providers can also be located on the United Healthcare Student Resources website.
