Health Care and Insurance Recap

We realize that health care, health insurance, and medical information can be a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Here is a recap of some of the important information we covered:

  • The U.S. does not have a national health care plan - you will need to purchase health insurance
  • You can comply with the Penn State health insurance requirement by enrolling in the SHIP for Penn State or purchasing a comparable plan that meets all of the International Student and Dependent Waiver Standards for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Remember that the insurance plan you choose must meet high standards (link to waiver standards) so it is imperative that you DO NOT purchase any insurance plan until you check with the insurance company and confirm that the policy meets the Penn State waiver standards Links to an external site. (insurance requirements).
  • There are a number of health care facilities available when seeking treatment. To keep costs low, try visiting a campus health care center when possible.

You will learn more about health insurance when you participate in Orientation.

You may reach out to the Student Health Insurance office with questions by calling 814-865-4UHS (4847) or sending an email to uhs-insurance@psu.edu.  Many of the answers to your questions can also be found on the Student Health Insurance website Links to an external site..  The staff is able to address the SHIP for Penn State questions and concerns for all students at all of the Penn State campuses.
