Description

Welcome to CAS 283: Communication and Information Technology I.

Communication and Information Technology I is designed to provide a foundation of general computing knowledge and skills that may be applied in both your college career and out in the workforce. The course material provides you with guidance on which aspects to focus on, with clear learning objectives, key terms, assignments, and self-mastery exercises. The commentaries and assignments will help you integrate and apply the information and develop skills that are to be learned.

This course provides you with an overview of the Web and helps you to develop a variety of ways to interact with the Web. You will learn various social media tools; issues related to the Web and communication; how to use search engines to locate information on subjects that interest you; how to tell if the information is reliable; how to use several computer mediated communication vehicles via the Web; and how to differentiate between Web addresses so that you have an idea of what subject area they stem from, such as education, commerce, military, etc. The lessons are designed to give you some basic skills as well as understanding in using your computer and the Internet.

Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. identify key terms of computer use
  2. use the basic MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  3. recognize computer mediated communication basic theories
  4. identify online communities and issues
  5. recall basic knowledge of social media tools

Organization

This course is made up of 9 lessons.

For a typical lesson, you will complete the following activities and assignments:

  • Explore online course content.
  • Read a few assigned readings.
  • Complete the assignments.

In addition, you will complete the following major assignments: 6 Journal Reflections.

Online Learning and Attendance

This course has been developed to promote asynchronous learning. The instructor and students do NOT meet on a designated day and time each week. For each lesson, there is a timeframe to complete all activities and assignments, and you may work at your own pace within that timeframe. However, you must adhere to the due dates outlined on the Calendar. (Due dates can also be viewed under the Syllabus tab.) You should log into the course daily to check for updates, review lessons, and participate in activities.

All course materials can be accessed in the course except for the software (Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows, Microsoft Office 2011 for MAC).

Make sure to print out a copy of the course syllabus as soon as you access the course.

Due Dates

All assignments are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the date indicated on the Calendar. (Due dates can be also be viewed under the Syllabus tab.) Please be aware that Canvas follows the Eastern Time (ET) time zone. Assignment due dates adhere to this time zone, and it is your responsibility to submit assignments accordingly. If you are outside of the ET time zone, you can set your Canvas account to sync to it. Refer to the Set a Time Zone article in the Canvas Guide at https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2891.

As a general rule, you will NOT be able to go back and make up missed assignments. It is your responsibility to keep up with your assignments. Students with an excused absence (e.g. hospitalization, jury duty, family emergency, or military service) may be asked to produce proper documentation in order to make up graded work. All make-up work is at the discretion of the instructor.

Veterans and currently serving military personnel and/or spouses with unique circumstances (e.g. upcoming deployments, drill/duty requirements, disabilities, VA appointments, etc.) are welcome and encouraged to communicate these, in advance if possible, to the instructor in the case that special arrangements need to be made.

Notes

  • To Do List: Some assignments may not appear in the To Do list under the Home tab. Use the Calendar or Syllabus to ensure that you are fully aware of assignment due dates.
  • Late Assignments: The grade of assignments received up to one week after the due date will be reduced by ten percent. Each additional week late will result in an additional 10 percent grade reduction. Work more than 3 weeks late will not be accepted. If an emergency arises that prevents you from completing your work on time, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can make arrangements for you to keep up in the course.
  • Note: There will be a 10% grade deduction for any late work including formal assignments and discussion forum postings and replies. After one (1) week past the original due date, I will no longer accept any late work, nor will I accept a batch posting of late work at the end of the semester. You must hand in all assignments to pass the course.

Counseling and Psychological Services

Penn State's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office offers residential and distance-based Penn State students non-emergency mental health services in the form of case management, community resource referrals, supportive listening, care giver support, and much more.
