Preparing Your Course for Mastery Paths

Introduction

Mastery Paths allows you to create a customized learning path for your students based on academic performance in your course.  The initial assessment is either a graded quiz or assignment.

When you are preparing a course that will utilize Mastery Paths, you should begin with a Mastery Paths Quiz or Assignment.  This will ensure the conditional items will be based upon the student's score of the initial assessment.

  2.  Plan your course content

NOTE: Files, External URLs and External Tool module items cannot be used as conditional items in Mastery Paths.

Identify Differentiated Learning

Differentiated learning is done by tailoring the instruction of your course to meet the needs of the individual student.  Differentiated learning allows you to create a variety of assignments, quizzes, discussions, and pages with different content, availability, and due dates.  You have the ability to designate specific assignments to individual students, groups, or everyone in the course.

Plan Course Content

Prior to adding your content into your course in Canvas, it is best practice to map out your different learning paths. It is important to organize your content ahead of time particularly when utilizing Mastery Paths because the paths may be extensive.

Once you have completed the planning process, you will be able to enter the content in sequential order into your module. As you create your content, you can connect the content you wish to be part of Mastery Paths.

Below, you will see an example of a flow chart that was used to map out Mastery Paths in a Canvas course:
