Setting Up Mastery Paths

Introduction

There are two different key items to keep in mind when setting up Mastery Paths, initial/diagnostic assignment and conditional items.  The initial assessment is a graded assignment, either a quiz or an assignment.  Based on the student's performance on the initial assessment, Mastery Paths will then determine the path the student takesThe conditional items consist of the content items the students will complete in the path.  As the instructor, you will determine the grade/range interval for each path.

Below is an image of a Module that contains an assignment that does not fall with in a Mastery Paths. The image also includes Mastery Paths Initial assessment and conditional assignments.

Enabling Mastery Paths in your Account

Mastery Paths may be enabled automatically in your course. If it is not, you have the ability to turn it on for each of your courses.  Be sure that prior to creating any content for Mastery Paths that this option is turned on.  In order to enable Mastery Paths, follow these steps in the KB article below.

Utilize Mastery Paths in your course

Mastery Paths allows you to customize your course’s learning experience for your students based on their performance.  The process will begin on the course Modules page. A student’s initial diagnostic assessment score determines the conditional path each student will follow.  Any graded assignments, graded quizzes, or graded discussions can be used as conditional content for a Mastery Path.  Pages may also be used as part of the conditional content if the individual page is indicated to be allowed in Mastery Paths.

Review the following tutorial to learn how to create Mastery Paths in your course:

Mastery Paths can be created in either an existing or newly developed courseTo begin using Mastery Paths in your course, start by placing the course content in sequential order in your module.  It is strongly recommended that you begin with a graded quiz, since this will determine the path your learner will take.  Then, include the conditional items that each path will include. Consider reassessing the students with the initial quiz once the Mastery Paths are completed.

Allow a Page to be a Mastery Path Item

Typically pages in Canvas are used to contain content and do not require gradingHowever, you are able to use a page as a conditional item in Mastery PathsIn order to use a page as a conditional item, you need to “Allow in Mastery Paths,” so that it can be added to the Mastery Path.
