Sync Rosters

Once you have connected your Canvas and Top Hat courses, you can sync rosters. Your first sync will take place that night at 1:00 AM. For any student who’s already a part of your Canvas course and has clicked on any Top Hat LTI link in the Canvas course, this initial first sync will automatically add the student to the Top Hat course. Students do not have to manually enroll themselves in Top Hat.

After your initial roster sync, Top Hat courses perform an automatic roster sync every night. Or you can also manually sync your roster, if you wish to perform on-demand or manual roster sync.

NOTE: If syncing attendance, students must enter Top Hat through the Canvas LTI at least once or they will continue to be dropped from the Top Hat course on a nightly basis.

Deep Linking

You can link Top Hat content to your Canvas course through deep linking. Students within the Canvas course will be able to access the assigned Top Hat content, both graded and non-graded, within the Canvas LMS. Grades are also synced to Canvas automatically for all deep linked Top Hat content.

Sync Gradebook

When you have your Top Hat LTI link set up in your Canvas course, you can sync grades from the Top Hat course to the Canvas Gradebook both automatically and manually. Grades for any deep linked Top Hat content are automatically synced to Canvas Gradebook. Items that are not directly associated with Canvas, such as attendance, can be synced manually.

NOTES:

Please be sure to set the maximum grades in Canvas to be the same as the maximum grades in Top Hat to avoid any grade mismatch.
Automatic attendance sync is also included in Top Hat Grade Sync. A column is automatically created in the Canvas Gradebook for the attendance grade. Please note that one point of attendance grade is automatically given to students per class attendance. However, if you need to assign a different percentage or point grading scheme for attendance, you will need to manually enter attendance grade in Canvas Gradebook.
