Understanding Unconscious Bias

Everyone, and we do mean everyone, has unconscious or implicit bias. Unconscious Bias is an association or perception about a person or social group that operates beyond our immediate awareness. It can inform our perceptions, influence our decision-making, and determine some of our behavior. This exists for everyone and if left unchecked, can affect our actions in the classroom and workplace. We might not be totally conscious of our our internal biases or even notice them, but the people around us do perceive them. Unconscious bias creates barriers to equity, inclusion, and belonging.
